The NYS Security Guard Act of 1992 requires registration and training of security guards.

We provide training and information on the necessary steps required to obtain a New York State license in security guard service or a New York State certification as a bail enforcement agent. Constituents must be 18 years of age or older to obtain a security guard license and 25 years of age or older to obtain a bail enforcement certification.

Emergency management courses offered are First Aid, CPR and AED and Active Shooter. These courses provide essential skills and tactics to use in serious and critical situations.

SECURITY GUARD COURSES

Pre-Assignment Course (8hr)

The pre-assignment course is required for all individuals seeking employment as a security guard.

This course satisfies the minimum criteria recommended by the New York State Security Guard Advisory Council and leads to a training certificate required for employment as a security guard.

The 8-Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course for Security Guards contains seven mandated topic areas of study and will conclude with the required one hour for review and examination:

• Introduction
• Role of a Security Guard
• Legal Powers and Limitations
• Communications and Public Relations
• Access Control
• Ethics and Conduct
• Emergency Situations

The taking and passing of a written examination is required prior to the issuance of a certificate of successful completion. Successful completion of this class is required prior to employment as a security guard.  Upon completion of the class, a certificate of successful completion will be presented to the student that same day. This certificate must accompany your Security Guard license application when submitted to the Department of State.

All instructors providing the New York State mandated 8-hour Pre-assignment Training Course are certified through the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) / Security Guard Program (SGP) in accordance with Part 6029 of the New York State Official Compilation of Codes, Rules and regulations.

On the Job Training (OJT) Course (16hr)

The 16-hour course relates to the security guards duties, nature of the workplace, and the requirements of the security guard company.

This course is a requirement for all security guards in New York State and must be completed within 90 days of employment/application submission for Department of State Security Guard registration.

The General 16-Hour On-the-Job Training Course for Security Guards will be taught over two (8- hour) sessions. The General 16-Hour On-the-Job Training Course contains nine mandated topic areas of study that will conclude with the required one hour for review and examination.

The General 16-Hour On-the-Job Training Course for Security Guards will include the required topics:

• Role of a Security Guard
• Legal Powers and Limitations
• Emergency Situations
• Communications and Public Relations
• Access Control
• Ethics and Conduct
• Report Writing
• Overview of the Incident
• Command System
• Terrorism Related Topics

All instructors providing the New York State mandated 16-Hour On-The-Job security Guard Training Course (OJT) are certified through the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Security Guard Program (SGP) in accordance with Part 6029 of the New York State Official Compilation of Codes, Rules and regulations.

Duration: 16hrs (two 8hr sessions)

Annual In-Service (8hr)

This course is a requirement for all security guards in New York State and must be completed on a calendar year basis for each year succeeding the completion of the mandated 8-hour Annual course.

This course is designed to meet current training needs and refresh or update guards in changes in the field of security. The 8-hour Annual In-Service Course is comprised of eight topics that include six mandated topics and two elective topics.

The 8-Hour Annual In-Service Course for Security Guards includes the following topics:

• Role of a Security Guard
• Legal Powers and Limitations
• Emergency Response
• Report Writing
• Ethics
• Communications and Public Relations
• First Aid Awareness
• Theft Prevention

The Security Guard must complete this course as a prerequisite for renewal of their Security Guard license. Successful completion of this course is required each year succeeding the first year of employment. A certificate of successful completion will be presented to the student at the end of class.

All instructors providing the New York State mandated Annual In-Service training are certified through the Security Guard Program (SGP) in accordance with Part 6029 of the New York State Compilation of Codes, Rules and Regulations.

EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT COURSES

Active Violence Emergency Response Training (AVERT) Course (4hr)

The AVERT training provides emergency response tactics and stop the bleeding methods to give participants the skills needed in an active shooter emergency. Participants will learn how to recognize the signs of danger, react appropriately, and make rapid survival decisions in an active shooter situation.

FIRST AID/CPR/AED Course (4hr)

This Basic Life Support training emphasizes the importance of recognizing an emergency, how to conduct an assessment on an unresponsive or responsive individual, what precautions and protective barriers to use and how to provide effective First Aid, CPR and AED in case of injury or illness.

NYS Bail Enforcement Agent Course (25hr)

This course provides participants with the required 25 hours of training needed towards a certification only.  Must be 25 years of age to take the course.
